THE MEANING OF ‘ENSO’

‘Enso’ is a Japanese word meaning ‘circle’.
In Zen Buddhism, an enso is traditionally painted with a single brush stroke and symbolizes a moment when the mind is focused, yet free.
It symbolizes enlightenment, simplicity, uninhibited expression, strength, balance, and elegance.
Some artists paint their enso with an opening in the circle, expressing an idea that the enso is not separate, but is part of something greater, or that imperfection is an essential and inherent aspect of existence.
